How Toastmasters Helped Me Secure a Great New Role
February 1, 2015
I recently applied to become a Non Executive Board Member of NHS Highland. This is a challenging, complex and rewarding role dealing with the governance of a diverse health authority.
Having applied online I was invited along to a selection panel interview. Part of the process involved giving a 4 minute presentation on what I felt the challenges facing the board were about and how the board would help in meeting those challenges.
Attending Toastmasters gave me the skill to be able to put together an effective and memorable speech. It helped me learn how to structure the speech, making it clear and understandable to the listeners with transitions from section to section that were easy to follow. I was able to get across my key points effectively and memorably using the power of three and to sum up clearly and concisely.
My Toastmasters experience also meant I didn't run over my time, infact I stated before I started I would finish early and I did.
Now don't get me wrong I wasn't some quiet person with no public speaking experience before I joined Toastmasters, far from it. I could talk quite easily in public but I didn't have the skills, techniques and tools to make the experience engaging and memorable for the listeners.
I have no doubt that giving such an effective, clear and well structured presentation helped me secure this fantastic role. Thanks Toastmasters :)
